In a distressing incident in Gujarat's Aravalli district, police have arrested an unmarried woman and her mother for allegedly disposing of a newborn baby's body in a well near Modasa town. The case came to light on May 14 when the body of the infant was discovered, prompting a complaint at the Modasa Town police station under Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against an unidentified woman for abandoning the infant to conceal childbirth.
Investigation and Arrests
During the investigation, police received information that a woman named Nasimbanu had stopped leaving her house after the incident. When questioned, she appeared nervous and gave unsatisfactory answers. Under sustained interrogation, she allegedly revealed that she was engaged to a man from Vadgam village in Dhansura taluka and had consensual physical relations with him, resulting in pregnancy.
Home Delivery and Disposal
According to police, Nasimbanu claimed she was unaware of the pregnancy until she suddenly experienced abdominal pain. She informed her mother, Aminabanu, who allegedly assisted in delivering the baby at home during the night. Since Nasimbanu was unmarried and the family feared social stigma, the mother allegedly wrapped the newborn's body in a red cloth and threw it into a nearby well.
Legal Action
Both women have been arrested and are facing charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The case highlights the severe consequences of social stigma and the need for awareness about safe and legal options for unmarried mothers.
