A 47-year-old woman sustained injuries after being stabbed by a group of youths while attempting to thwart a motorcycle theft in Ennore near Tiruvottiyur late on Saturday. Police apprehended five individuals, including two juveniles, in connection with the incident.
Incident Details
The victim, Deepa, a resident of Eraneeswarar Koil 3rd Street in Ennore, heard unusual noises outside her house and rushed out. She observed a group of youths attempting to steal a motorcycle and a moped parked beneath her residence late at night. They were also tampering with other motorbikes.
When Deepa confronted the suspects, they verbally abused her. As she tried to stop them, one of the youths attacked her with a knife before fleeing with his accomplices, according to police. Neighbors, alerted by her cries, arrived at the scene and attempted to search for the culprits, but the suspects managed to escape.
Injuries and Investigation
Deepa sustained knife wounds on her hand and was admitted to Tiruvottiyur Government Hospital for treatment. Based on her complaint, the Ennore police registered a case and launched an investigation. On Sunday, authorities arrested five persons in connection with the crime.
The arrested individuals include two 17-year-old juveniles from Ernavur Tsunami Quarters, and three others identified as Santhosh (33) from Thazhankuppam, Lokeshwaran (22), and Jayanthan (18). The accused were traced using CCTV footage from the crime scene.
Motive and Background
Police revealed that the accused were under the influence of ganja and had attempted to steal the bike. They were reportedly targeting unlocked vehicles to make quick money. Authorities are investigating whether the suspects are involved in any previous offenses.
The accused have been remanded in judicial custody, while the juveniles were sent to an observation home.
