A 32-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself at her residence in Jaipur’s Amer area early Wednesday morning. Her parental family has accused her husband and in-laws of murder, claiming she was assaulted late Tuesday night.
Incident Details
The deceased, identified as Rekha Sen, lived with her husband Vishnu and their eight-year-old son in Naiyon Ka Mohalla, located behind the Amer police station. The matter came to light on Wednesday morning when authorities were alerted. Police arrived at the scene along with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team. They brought down the body and transported it to the government hospital in Amer for postmortem examination.
Police Investigation
Police have registered a case and initiated a probe into the incident. A senior officer stated, “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide, but action will be taken on the basis of evidence that emerges during investigation.” The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are awaiting the postmortem report.
Family Protest and Allegations
Soon after the incident, more than 50 members of Rekha’s parental family gathered outside the Amer police station and staged a protest. They demanded that a murder case be registered against her husband and in-laws. Rekha’s mother, Saroj Devi, repeatedly broke down while seeking justice for her daughter outside the police station. She alleged that Rekha was assaulted by her husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law on Tuesday night. “My daughter cannot commit suicide. They killed her,” she claimed. Saroj Devi added that Rekha had spoken to her over the phone around 7:30 pm on Tuesday and had indicated she was facing problems at her in-laws’ home.
Other family members alleged that Rekha had faced harassment since her marriage. They claimed she was frequently stopped from talking to family members, going outside, or even wearing clothes of her choice. The family’s protest continued for several hours, demanding strict action against the accused.
Background and Context
The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns about dowry harassment and domestic violence in the region. Rekha’s family has urged the police to thoroughly investigate the case and not dismiss it as a simple suicide. Authorities have assured that all evidence will be examined, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
