Women Protesters Clash with Security Forces in Churachandpur Over MLA's Political Move
In a dramatic turn of events, a scuffle broke out between women protesters and security forces in Churachandpur on Thursday. The confrontation occurred as demonstrators pressed towards the residence of Churachandpur MLA LM Khaute, vehemently protesting his decision to join the new government led by Chief Minister Y Khemchand.
Protest Escalates from Sit-In to March
The protest, organized under the Vaiphei Women Association (VWA), commenced at 11 am at the Vaiphei Peoples Council campus as a peaceful sit-in dharna. However, it quickly swelled into a determined march towards Khaute's residence located on Thangjam Road. Hundreds of women demonstrators, carrying placards with messages such as "Stand With the People, Not the Government", pushed past heavy security cordons set up by authorities.
By 1.30 pm, the situation intensified, leading to a brief scuffle between the protesters and security forces. The forces ultimately forced the dispersal of the crowd, but not before tensions had visibly escalated on the streets.
Voices of Betrayal and Community Resentment
Throughout the protest, chants of "Traitor" and "Turn Deaf Ear to His People's Suffering" echoed loudly, reflecting the deep-seated anger among the demonstrators. Pak Hoi, spokesperson of the Vaiphei Women Association general headquarters, articulated the group's stance, stating, "The protest has been organised to express our strong opposition to LM Khaute's decision to join the popular government, which we see as a betrayal of our community's trust and interest."
Asserting that Khaute, a member of the Vaiphei tribe, had sparked significant resentment within his community by aligning with the government, Pak Hoi emphasized that the MLA had gone against the collective stand of his people. The VWA released a statement condemning Khaute's actions, describing them as "a slap on the face of the Kuki-Zo community, who have suffered at the hands of the government."
The statement further pointed out the perceived injustices, highlighting "the silence on the killing of Kuki-Zo people and the naked parade of our women and the atrocity committed against our women is deafening." This rhetoric underscores the broader grievances fueling the protest, extending beyond Khaute's political decision to encompass issues of justice and human rights.
