A group of youths had a miraculous escape after encountering a herd of wild elephants near Uluppuni Mullakkanam, close to the Idukki Dam on Sunday morning. According to reports, the incident occurred when the youths ventured into forest-fringe areas exposed due to the receding water levels in the dam.
Four wild elephants had been stationed in the area, and the youths inadvertently came face-to-face with them. Locals alleged that despite repeated warnings, the youths provoked the elephants by chasing them as they attempted to retreat upon sensing human presence. The herd reportedly charged towards the youths, who managed to escape unharmed by running away just in time, averting a potential tragedy.
Locals pointed out that elephants generally do not pose a threat to those familiar with the area, such as people who visit the dam site for fishing or cattle grazing. However, they expressed concern that irresponsible behaviour by outsiders could endanger both humans and wildlife.
Meanwhile, the Idukki range forest officer stated that efforts are under way to identify the youths who trespassed into the forest area, and legal action will be taken against them.
