Zubeen Garg Fan Club Voices Disillusionment Amid Assam's Election Frenzy
As the election fever sweeps through Assam, with political parties and candidates actively campaigning on the streets to connect with voters, a significant segment of the electorate remains unenthused. The members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club, established a decade ago to support the beloved singer and promote his works and ideology, are expressing deep disillusionment with the political landscape.
Unresolved Death Case Casts a Shadow
Six months after the tragic demise of singer Zubeen Garg, the lack of satisfactory progress in his death case has left fan club members feeling let down. They allege that political parties have exploited the singer's death for electoral gains, politicizing a personal tragedy. Club president Ankur Kharjgharia highlighted that this unresolved issue could still sway voters' decisions when they head to the polling booths during this election cycle.
"Zubeen is not there physically to raise his voice against anything wrong. There has been a sudden jump in the fans of Zubeen after his demise. We never saw many people coming out to join Zubeen in his noble works. Now, everyone, including political parties, is using Zubeen for their personal gain," Kharjgharia stated.
Legal Developments and Government Promises
Kharjgharia pointed out that despite the passage of time, there have been few significant developments in the case. Notable events include a court order to de-freeze the bank accounts of North East India Festival organizer Shaynkanu Mahanta, one of the accused, and a Singapore coroner's court judgment ruling the singer's death as an accidental drowning.
Contrasting this, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Assam assembly during its winter session last year that it was a "plain and simple murder" and assured that his government would deliver justice. However, Kharjgharia emphasized, "However, we all know that justice is delivered by the judiciary; not by a govt or a political party. Even after he said that, we have not seen satisfactory progress in the case. This has upset many and may emerge as a factor affecting voting patterns."
Potential Impact on Voting Patterns
The case is currently being heard in a sessions court in Guwahati and is set to be transferred to a fast-track court to expedite the trial. With over 12,000 members across the state, the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club represents a substantial voter base whose disillusionment could influence election outcomes. As political parties continue their campaigns, the club's stance underscores a broader sentiment of frustration with the politicization of personal tragedies and the slow pace of justice.
In a state where election enthusiasm is typically high, the fan club's lack of engagement serves as a poignant reminder of how unresolved issues and perceived political opportunism can dampen voter morale, potentially reshaping the electoral dynamics in Assam.
