Aizawl International Half Marathon 2026 Concludes with Record Participation
The second edition of the Aizawl International Half Marathon (AIHM) 2026 concluded on a resounding high note this past Saturday, firmly establishing Mizoram as one of India's fastest-rising destinations for distance running. The event drew an impressive turnout of nearly 3,000 runners, including 16 elite international athletes, transforming the city into a vibrant global sporting arena.
Flag-Off and International Presence
Gen Vijay Kumar Singh officially flagged off the AIHM 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl's Mualpui neighbourhood early in the morning. The marathon witnessed robust participation from athletes representing a diverse array of countries, including Kenya, Ethiopia, Bahrain, the United Kingdom, and France. This international contingent was joined by elite and amateur runners from across India, with a particularly strong representation from the northeastern region.
Organizational Framework and Growth
Organised jointly by the Mizoram government and Innovations India under the theme "Connecting India, Developing Mizoram, Empowering Sports," the event marked a significant leap from its debut edition last year. The inaugural marathon in 2025 had attracted approximately 1,500 participants, largely from the northeast. Within just one year, participation surged by almost 100%, a growth that organisers described as a clear testament to the marathon's growing credibility and expanding appeal.
The event was held under the distinguished patronage of the Governor and Chief Minister Lalduhoma, with strong support from Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Minister for Sports & Tourism. This high-level backing underscored the state's commitment to promoting sports and tourism through such flagship events.
Winners and Results
In the highly competitive 21km Open Male category, Kenya's Kemboi Kevin Kiprono secured a decisive first-place finish. He was followed by Nafsen Ejeta Balcha and Clinton Kibet Mutai, who claimed the second and third positions respectively.
The 21km Open Female category saw Renu Singh clinch the top position, demonstrating exceptional endurance and speed. Tsige Debay Tadese and Marta Hirpato Yota finished in second and third place, rounding out the podium with impressive performances.
Impact and Future Prospects
The successful conclusion of the AIHM 2026 not only highlights the event's rapid growth but also solidifies Mizoram's reputation as an emerging hub for athletic excellence in India. The substantial increase in both domestic and international participation reflects the marathon's effective organisation and its appeal as a premier sporting event. With continued support from state authorities and growing interest from the global running community, the Aizawl International Half Marathon is poised to become a cornerstone event in India's sporting calendar, fostering development and empowerment through sports.
