Bihar's Annu Kumari Returns Home a Blind T20 World Cup Champion, Eyes Govt Job
Blind Cricket Champ Annu Kumari Hopes for Govt Job After World Cup Win

The small village of Mukundpur in Buxar district and the historic Dumraon Raj estate were awash with pride and celebration on Thursday. The reason was the triumphant homecoming of their very own Annu Kumari, now a T20 World Cup champion. Her victory on the global cricket stage has ignited a shared hope for a government job that could transform her family's life after years of financial hardship.

A Village Celebrates Its Champion

Annu Kumari, the all-rounder of the Indian Blind Women’s Cricket Team, was greeted with overwhelming warmth by fellow villagers and her proud parents, Pramila Devi and Sohan Chaudhary. The entire community felt a part of the historic victory, seeing it as a win for all of Bihar.

The celebrations took a regal turn at Bhojpur Kothi, where Man Vijay Singh, a senior member of the Dumraon royal family, personally welcomed Annu. He garlanded her, offered sweets, and lauded her incredible achievement. Honoring a wish from her father, Singh arranged for Annu's celebratory procession to be held in the late Maharaja Kamal Singh's vintage open Gypsy, adding a touch of royal grandeur to the local festivity.

The Road to World Cup Glory

The pinnacle of this journey was reached on Sunday when India clinched the inaugural Blind Women’s T20 World Cup title. In the final at Colombo's P Sara Oval, India faced Nepal, who set a target of 114 runs for the loss of five wickets. The Indian team, displaying dominant form, chased down the target convincingly in just 12.1 overs, maintaining an unbeaten record throughout the entire tournament.

Annu's path to this moment began in her village school. She later moved to Patna under the disabled quota to complete her Class X and Class XII examinations. It was after shifting to Delhi that her exceptional sporting talent truly flourished and found its platform on the international stage.

A Dream Beyond the Trophy

For Annu and her family, the World Cup win is a milestone, but the goal is a secure future. Her father works as the head caretaker of the Dumraon royal family’s cowshed. As the eldest of five siblings, Annu grew up amidst severe financial constraints, which now fuels her primary ambition.

"I felt immense pride meeting the President of India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of the winning team," Annu said. "Now, I hope to meet Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. My first priority is to secure a government job under the sports quota. This will allow me to support my family and take care of my sisters' education and marriages. Only after fulfilling this responsibility will I think about my own marriage."

The news of her World Cup success has transformed Mukundpur into a hub of unrestrained joy. Yet, for Annu Kumari, the real victory will be the government job that turns her sporting glory into lasting stability for her loved ones, proving that her greatest innings might still be ahead of her.
