The long-awaited revival of Guntur's historic Brahmananda Reddy Stadium has finally gained significant momentum. The Centre has granted in-principle approval for crucial infrastructure upgrades. This move signals a decisive step toward restoring the stadium's past glory and positioning Guntur as an emerging sports hub in Andhra Pradesh.
Centre Sanctions Funds Under Khelo India Scheme
As part of the state government's ₹170-crore proposal to strengthen sports infrastructure, the Centre has sanctioned ₹14 crore under the Khelo India scheme. This funding is specifically allocated for constructing a modern multi-sports complex at BR Stadium. The facility will be designed to meet national and international standards.
Modern Multi-Sports Complex Specifications
The new complex will measure 60 metres by 40 metres with a height of 12.5 metres. This approval clears the way for phased development, with additional funds expected to be mobilised in subsequent stages. Once completed, the upgraded stadium will provide world-class training and competition facilities.
Nurturing Young Talent and Regional Athletes
The upgraded stadium aims to nurture young talent and support aspiring athletes from the region. Guntur East legislator Mohammed Naseer emphasised the project's potential to create opportunities for athletes to compete at higher levels. He also highlighted its role in encouraging greater youth participation in sports.
"We are going to revive the historical stadium which was neglected by the previous government," said Naseer. "We got the central funds thanks to the consistent efforts by the state government headed by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu."
Expeditious Clearance and Implementation Plans
Officials have confirmed that the Centre has assured expeditious clearance once a revised proposal, aligned with scheme guidelines, is submitted. The Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) expressed confidence that works would be launched soon and executed on schedule.
