Coelho Siblings Dominate Asian Games Selection Trials, Father Advocates for Enhanced Support
Panaji: Donald Coelho, a former national windsurfing champion, has always maintained unwavering confidence in his abilities and those of his children. This belief was fully validated during the recent Asian Games Selection Trials conducted by the Yachting Association of India in Mumbai. Donald watched with pride as his accomplished sailor children, Dayne and Katya Coelho, secured victories in the men's and women's iQFOiL categories, outperforming some of the nation's top sailors.
Expected Victories Marred by Disturbing Incident
The triumphs were largely anticipated, given that both siblings had previously clinched gold medals at the 2023 National Games in Goa. However, the trials were not without tense moments. During the second race, a competitor nearly collided with Dayne, an incident that left Donald deeply unsettled and concerned for his son's safety.
"Let them be out there on the waters, unobstructed, and allow them to fully display their talent. I am confident they would win every single race," Donald expressed in a recent interview. "The trials presented numerous challenges, but I am relieved they ultimately excelled. It has been a difficult journey. At times, I question why I encouraged them to pursue this sport when they could have simply managed our family business."
Half the Battle Won: The Road to Asian Games Qualification
Securing victory at the Asian Games Selection Trials represents only the initial step. In accordance with the performance pathway established by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the selected sailors must now achieve a top-six finish among Asian nations at designated international events abroad to meet the final qualification criteria.
Donald remains optimistic about their prospects. "Dayne participated in the world championships in Denmark last year and placed fifth among Asian competitors. I am certain he will not only qualify for the Asian Games but also be a strong contender for a medal. Consider that with limited training, he performed admirably at the Worlds. With adequate support for quality training and international exposure, his potential is immense."
Katya's achievements are equally impressive. She has now qualified for her third consecutive Asian Games, a rare feat that underscores remarkable consistency at the elite level. "Katya endured sleepless nights when her clearance was delayed by the sports ministry prior to the last Asian Games. We simply require proper support to transform our medal aspirations into reality," Donald emphasized.
Financial Hurdles and Personal Investments
The journey has been fraught with financial obstacles. Donald revealed that when Katya approached the Goa Yachting Association for equipment assistance, she was asked to provide a security deposit of ₹5 lakh. "This demand arrived as a severe emotional setback during a critical phase of national selection," the father lamented.
Consequently, the family personally invested approximately ₹12 lakh to purchase the equipment used by both siblings during the trials. Additionally, they have engaged a foreign personal coach on a full-time basis to ensure comprehensive preparation for major events. "The coach has been working with Dayne for nearly eight months. Previously, we hired coaches on short-term contracts, but that proved insufficient, necessitating a more permanent arrangement," Donald explained.
Crucial Year Ahead and Appeal for Government Support
The year 2026 holds significant importance for the Coelho siblings. The Asian Games are scheduled to take place in Japan later this year. Prior to that, they must deliver strong performances in international competitions to secure their spots for the continental showcase in Aichi–Nagoya.
Donald has issued a heartfelt appeal for support. "My children urgently require international exposure, high-performance equipment, and financial backing for elite-level preparation. The state government must step forward proactively. Before the National Games in Goa, we proposed to the government: permit us to train abroad in Italy for one month, and we guarantee a medal for Goa. The government agreed, and both children won gold. However, we are still awaiting the promised funds," he stated, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by aspiring athletes in India.
