Ben Stokes, one of England's greatest all-rounders, has announced his retirement from international cricket, effective after the upcoming Trent Bridge Test against West Indies in July 2026. The 35-year-old confirmed the decision in a statement released by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), citing the physical and mental toll of the sport.
Stokes' Career Highlights
Stokes, who made his Test debut in 2013, has been a pivotal figure in English cricket. He played a key role in England's 2019 Cricket World Cup victory, scoring an unbeaten 84 in the final against New Zealand, and was instrumental in the 2019 Ashes series, notably with his heroic 135 not out at Headingley. In Test cricket, he has scored over 6,000 runs and taken more than 200 wickets. In ODIs, he has 3,000+ runs and 74 wickets, while in T20Is, he has amassed 1,200+ runs and 25 wickets.
Reason for Retirement
Stokes said, "Playing for England has been the greatest honor of my life, but the demands of international cricket have taken a heavy toll on my body and mind. After much thought, I believe it is the right time to step away and allow the next generation to take over." He added that the Trent Bridge Test will be his final appearance in an England shirt.
Reactions from the Cricket World
ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould praised Stokes, saying, "Ben is a once-in-a-generation cricketer. His contributions to English cricket are immeasurable, and we respect his decision. He leaves a legacy that will inspire future generations." Former England captain Alastair Cook called Stokes "the most competitive player I've ever played with."
Impact on England Cricket
Stokes' retirement leaves a significant void in the England team. His leadership and match-winning abilities will be missed, especially in Test cricket, where he served as captain from 2022 to 2024. The ECB has not yet announced a replacement for his role in the squad. Stokes, who also played for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, will continue to play franchise cricket worldwide.
