The Delhi High Court on Monday cleared the way for star wrestler Vinesh Phogat to compete in the Asian Games trials, setting aside the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) decision to exclude her. The court's order came as a major relief for the 28-year-old, who had been denied a trial by the WFI citing her prolonged absence from competition.
Court's Intervention
Justice Subramonium Prasad, hearing the plea, directed the WFI to allow Vinesh to participate in the trials scheduled for later this week. The court observed that the WFI's decision was arbitrary and that Vinesh, being a top-ranked wrestler, should not be deprived of a fair chance to represent the country. The judge remarked that sporting bodies must act fairly and transparently.
Background of the Case
Vinesh Phogat, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Asian Games silver medalist, had approached the High Court after the WFI refused to include her name in the trial list. The federation argued that she had not competed in any national event since the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, Vinesh's counsel contended that she had been training regularly and was fit to compete.
Reactions and Implications
Welcoming the verdict, Vinesh's father, Mahavir Phogat, said the decision was a victory for justice. He expressed confidence that his daughter would perform well in the trials and secure a spot for the Asian Games. The WFI has not yet commented on the court's order.
The Asian Games, originally scheduled for 2022 in Hangzhou, China, were postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indian wrestling contingent will be selected based on the trials, and Vinesh's participation is expected to boost the team's medal prospects.
