EFI Under Fire for Selecting Accused Official for International Event

The Equestrian Federation of India (EFI) has sparked significant controversy by appointing Col (retd) Tarsem Singh Warraich, who faces sexual harassment allegations, as the manager-cum-coach for the International Tent Pegging World Cup qualifiers in Jordan. The federation has attempted to clear his name without conducting a formal inquiry, drawing sharp criticism from various quarters.

EFI Justifies Selection Amid Legal Proceedings

In a move that has raised eyebrows, the EFI defended Warraich's selection by asserting he was the best candidate to accompany the four-member team to Jordan. This decision comes even as a court case against Warraich, involving alleged harassment and molestation charges filed by two army-background girls, continues to be heard. Warraich is currently out on bail until March 12, 2026, after which he must surrender to authorities as ordered by a fast-track court presided over by Additional Sessions Judge Justice Dr Jasbir Singh.

The sports ministry is now awaiting a detailed report from the EFI regarding Warraich's involvement with the team in Jordan. According to an email accessed by sources, EFI's acting president Col (retd) Jagat Singh communicated to the Oman-based International Tent Pegging Federation (ITPF) that Warraich claims the sexual harassment case registered against him in Sonepat in February 2023 is false. Singh further noted that the bail order imposes no restrictions on Warraich performing his duties as an EFI executive committee member for Tent-Pegging.

Broader Implications for Sports Governance

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about accountability and transparency in sports federations in India. The EFI's actions, perceived by many as bypassing due process, could set a troubling precedent for handling similar cases in the future. Stakeholders are calling for stricter adherence to ethical standards and proper investigative protocols to ensure the integrity of sports administration.

As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on how the EFI and relevant authorities will address the allegations and ensure that such controversies do not undermine the spirit of fair play and safety in sports. The outcome of this case may influence policies and practices across other sporting bodies in the country.
