Chelsea winger Estevao Willian will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a serious hamstring injury ended what had been a rapid rise for one of Brazil’s brightest young attackers. The teenager was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s 55-man preliminary squad, confirming fears that had grown inside both Chelsea and Brazil camps over the last few weeks. For a player who looked destined for his first World Cup only months ago, the setback has hit hard.
The injury came during Chelsea’s Premier League loss to Manchester United on April 18. Estevao pulled up while chasing a loose ball and limped off just 16 minutes into the match. Those close to the situation said the 19-year-old was visibly emotional afterward, aware almost immediately that the problem could threaten his place in Brazil’s plans for the summer tournament in North America. Since then, recovery rather than football has become his daily routine.
Will Chelsea star Estevao play for Brazil alongside Neymar?
No, Estevao will not feature for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Medical evaluations from both Chelsea and Brazil reportedly failed to guarantee a full recovery before the tournament, leading to his omission from the preliminary squad submitted to FIFA earlier this month.
The timing is especially cruel because Estevao had done enough to convince Ancelotti he belonged on the international stage. Before the injury, the Brazilian forward had become a regular option for the national side and was producing encouraging numbers in England after joining Chelsea from SE Palmeiras last summer. He scored eight goals in 36 appearances during his debut campaign and added four goals in his last four matches for Brazil.
While Estevao misses out, Neymar remains in contention. The 34-year-old forward was included in Brazil’s expanded preliminary squad as he pushes toward a fourth World Cup appearance. Ancelotti recently admitted Neymar “was and is” still part of his thinking, even as questions remain over the veteran’s fitness and sharpness.
Chelsea and Brazil now focus on Estevao’s long recovery
Chelsea have already accepted that Estevao will play no further part this season. Assistant coach Calum McFarlane confirmed the winger returned to Brazil to continue rehabilitation work and spend time recovering away from London.
“I know that Estevao has gone back to Brazil, he's not in London at the moment,” McFarlane said. “He's in Brazil recovering, but I'm sure those conversations are going on in terms of how long his recovery is going to be.”
He also praised the teenager’s attitude during a difficult stretch. “Estevao's a top player, top talent, really good to work with, but right now our focus is on the next three games, and we'll do whatever we can to help Estevao with his recovery.”
Brazil’s injury problems have not stopped with Estevao. Rodrygo and Eder Militao are also set to miss the tournament, leaving Ancelotti with fewer attacking options than expected heading into a demanding group featuring Morocco, Haiti and Scotland.
