Brazil secure knockout berth with dominant win
Brazil clinched their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a commanding 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match at Miami Stadium on Wednesday, June 24 (local time). Vinicius Junior was the standout performer, netting twice in the first half, while Matheus Cunha sealed the win after the break. The result ensured Carlo Ancelotti's side finished top of the group with seven points.
Vinicius makes history with early strike
Brazil started brightly and took the lead in the seventh minute after a defensive error by Scotland. Scott McKenna's misplaced pass was intercepted by Rayan, who set up Vinicius. The forward rounded Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and calmly slotted the ball into the net. According to ESPN FC, Vinicius became the first Brazilian player in 24 years to score in each of his nation's first three FIFA World Cup matches, a feat last achieved by Ronaldo Nazario and Rivaldo in 2002. He is only the fifth Brazilian to accomplish this, following Jairzinho (1970), Romario (1994), and the 2002 duo. Notably, Brazil went on to win the tournament on each of those three previous occasions.
VAR denies second goal but Vinicius doubles lead
Brazil continued to dominate possession and thought they had doubled their lead midway through the half, but Vinicius's second goal was ruled out after a VAR review. Scotland struggled to create clear chances against Brazil's organized defense. However, in first-half stoppage time, Bruno Guimaraes delivered an inviting cross into the box, and Vinicius rose unmarked at the back post to head home his second goal of the night, giving Brazil a 2-0 lead at halftime.
Cunha seals victory after the break
Scotland attempted to respond after the interval, but Brazil maintained control. In the 60th minute, Guimaraes drove into the penalty area and set up Matheus Cunha, who finished confidently to make it 3-0. Scotland goalkeeper Alisson Becker was forced into a couple of important saves as the Scots battled, but they could not find a way back into the match.
Neymar returns from injury
Brazil also welcomed Neymar back to action, with the 34-year-old forward making his first appearance of the tournament after recovering from injury. He came off the bench in the closing stages as Brazil comfortably saw out the victory.
Group C standings and next round
The result sees Brazil finish top of Group C with seven points, advancing to the Round of 32 alongside Morocco, who defeated Haiti 4-2 on the same day. Scotland, with three points, must wait to see if they progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
