Officials confirmed on Monday that no casualties occurred in the incident. All crew members from the four boats were rescued safely. The race took place along the Dumas coast, a popular area for maritime events.
Details of the Annual Competition
The National Fighter Club of the coastal area in Surat organized this competition. It forms part of the Mahajan Samarak Samudra Hodi Spardha, known as the Mahajan Memorial Sea Boat Competition. This event has been held every year for five decades, marking a long-standing tradition in the region.
A total of ten manual boats participated in this year's race. Each boat typically carries eight persons who handle different duties during the competition. The race covered a significant distance, starting at Hazira jetty and concluding at Magdalla port, spanning approximately 21 kilometers.
Rescue Efforts and Support Vessels
When the four boats overturned at various locations along the route, rescue teams immediately sprang into action. Their prompt response prevented any harm to the participants. Additionally, around fifty other boats sailed alongside the competitors. These support vessels served to cheer on the racers and provide assistance during emergencies.
