Greg Biffle, family die in private jet crash

The world of motorsports is in mourning following the tragic death of former NASCAR star Greg Biffle, his wife, and their two children. The family perished in a devastating private jet crash shortly after takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina.

The Tragic Flight and Immediate Aftermath

The ill-fated Cessna C550 Citation, with tail number N257BW, took off from Statesville bound for Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport in Florida. The flight was reported to have crashed around 10:15 a.m. local time. According to airport manager John Ferguson, the aircraft was fully engulfed in flames by the time first responders arrived on the scene. Multiple agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), responded to the incident which resulted in multiple fatalities.

Initial reports and flight tracking data from FlightAware indicate a harrowing sequence of events. The plane took off but immediately turned around and attempted to return to the airport for an emergency landing. The crash occurred during this attempted landing back at Statesville Regional Airport. The planned itinerary reveals the family was flying to Florida to spend an afternoon with friends before a scheduled trip to Treasure Cay in the Bahamas.

Family and Friends Confirm the Devastating Loss

The heartbreaking confirmation came not from official authorities first, but from a close family friend. YouTuber Garrett Mitchell, known online as Cleetus McFarland, shared the devastating news on social media. "Unfortunately, I can confirm Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, daughter Emma, and son Ryder were on that plane… because they were on their way to spend the afternoon with us," Mitchell wrote in a Facebook post. "We are devastated. I’m so sorry to share this."

Greg Biffle, 54, was a semi-retired professional racer, best known for his career in NASCAR. He married Cristina in January 2023. Their son, Ryder, was born in September 2020. Biffle's daughter, Emma, from a previous marriage, was born in 2007.

Investigation Focuses on Weather and Emergency Cause

Investigators are now piecing together the cause of the crash. A critical factor under review is the weather conditions at the time. According to AccuWeather, adverse weather was reported around Statesville Regional Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. Conditions included heavy drizzle and a low cloud ceiling of about 1,200 feet. Shortly after, at 10:30 a.m., the ceiling reportedly dropped to around 400 feet with heavy rain reducing visibility to less than 2 miles.

While weather is a primary focus, the exact reason the aircraft turned back for an emergency landing remains unknown. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead a detailed investigation, which officials caution could take months to a year or longer to determine a probable cause. The aviation community and fans worldwide await answers while grieving the profound loss of the Biffle family.
