Since then, a few gray horses have tried their luck, but none have managed to win. The closest they came in recent times was in 2021, when Essential Quality finished among the top runners, but still couldn't take first place. Overall, only eight gray horses have ever won the Kentucky Derby, which shows how rare such victories are in the sport. Names like Monarchos, Silver Charm, and Winning Colors remain part of that exclusive list.
