Kentucky Derby 2026: Gray Horses Aim to End 21-Year Drought

The 152nd edition of the Kentucky Derby will be held today at the famous Churchill Downs. A total of 20 horses will race for a huge prize of $5 million. This race is the first step in the Triple Crown series and is often called 'the most exciting two minutes in sport.' Over 150,000 fans are expected to attend, making the atmosphere lively and full of energy.

Gray Horses Aim to Break Long-Standing Kentucky Derby Drought

Only two gray horses will now run in the 2026 Kentucky Derby after a late withdrawal. Initially, three gray runners were expected to compete, but Fulleffort has been scratched from the race. This leaves Pavlovian and Great White as the only gray horses in the field. Despite the reduced number, both runners carry hopes of ending a long drought for gray horses in the Derby.

Gray horses haven't had much success in this famous race over the years. The last time a gray horse won the Kentucky Derby was in 2005, when Giacomo took the title. Since then, a few gray horses have tried their luck, but none have managed to win. The closest they came in recent times was in 2021, when Essential Quality finished among the top runners, but still couldn't take first place. Overall, only eight gray horses have ever won the Kentucky Derby, which shows how rare such victories are in the sport. Names like Monarchos, Silver Charm, and Winning Colors remain part of that exclusive list.

Many fans pick their favorite horse in fun and simple ways. Some go by the name, others by the color, and some just follow their gut feeling. But gray horses haven't had much success in recent years. Even so, they are getting attention again this time, although there have been a few last-minute changes in the lineup. With strong competition and growing excitement, this year's race is set to be another memorable one.
