Kerala's Rs 88 Crore Playground Project Launched

Kerala's Sports Minister V Abdurahiman has announced a major initiative to boost sports infrastructure across the state. The government has set aside Rs 88 crore from various budgets for the ambitious 'One Panchayat, One Playground' project.

District-Level Development

In Thiruvananthapuram district alone, authorities plan to develop seventeen new playgrounds under this scheme. Minister Abdurahiman made this announcement while inaugurating two newly constructed sports facilities in the region.

New Facilities Inaugurated

The minister inaugurated the Alanthara swimming pool at Nellanad grama panchayat in Vamanapuram. He also opened the Thanniyam stadium at Kallara grama panchayat during the same event.

Abdurahiman emphasized that the sports department is implementing multiple projects specifically in the Vamanapuram constituency. These initiatives aim to promote physical fitness among residents of all age groups.

Stadium Details

The Thanniyam stadium represents a significant investment in local sports infrastructure. Construction costs reached Rs 1 crore, with equal contributions of Rs 50 lakh each from the sports department's plan fund and the MLA fund.

This modern facility features several amenities:

  • A mud court for various sports activities
  • Dedicated volleyball and football courts
  • A step gallery for spectators
  • A sturdy retaining wall
  • Comprehensive drainage system
  • Secure fencing around the perimeter
  • An office room with toilet facilities

Additionally, the stadium complex includes an open gym and a walking track to encourage fitness activities among community members.

Swimming Pool Project

The Alanthara swimming pool, built at a cost of Rs 1 crore, serves dual purposes. It aims to improve rural fitness levels while providing training facilities for athletes aspiring to compete at national and international competitions.

Broader Infrastructure Investment

Minister Abdurahiman revealed that the state government has invested approximately Rs 3,500 crore in sports infrastructure development across Kerala. This substantial funding demonstrates the administration's commitment to creating world-class sports facilities throughout the state.

Political Support

Vamanapuram MLA D K Murali addressed the gathering, noting that Kerala's progress in the sports sector reflects the government's long-term vision for athletic development. He praised the consistent efforts to create accessible sports infrastructure across the state.

A A Rahim, Member of Parliament, served as the chief guest for the inauguration ceremony. Local body representatives and government officials also attended the event, showing broad political support for these sports initiatives.
