Maharashtra Cabinet Approves Free Land Transfer for Amravati Sports Complex
In a significant move to boost sports infrastructure, the Maharashtra state government has approved the free transfer of 16,708 square meters of land in Navsari near Amravati for the development of a sports complex. The decision, taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, also includes waiving key financial liabilities that had stalled the project, offering much-needed relief to the Amravati Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Background of the Land and Unauthorized Development
The land in question was originally reserved as a playground under the development plan and had been handed over to the civic body. However, AMC entered into agreements with third parties and initiated development without prior government approval. This included commercial use of 1,878.80 square meters of the land, which led to financial penalties.
Initially, the government directed the corporation to pay ₹10.90 crore as land valuation and ₹3.56 crore as interest for the commercial use dating back to 2011. These dues totaled ₹14.46 crore, adding to AMC's existing financial burdens, which include liabilities of nearly ₹350 crore from employee dues and pending contractor payments.
Government Intervention and Decision
Following intervention by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the state government decided to relax the conditions. Bawankule stated, "The decision was taken keeping in mind the city's contribution to producing athletes of national and international repute." The government has now cleared the free land transfer and fully waived the ₹3.56 crore interest, though the transfer remains subject to approval from the urban development department regarding the reservation status.
