Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu added another historic achievement to her career by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026. The victory marked India’s first gold of the Games and completed a hat-trick of CWG titles for Chanu, who previously triumphed in 2018 and 2022.
Emotional Triumph Under Pressure
Speaking to reporters after her victory, Chanu expressed her delight at contributing to India’s medal tally. “I am very happy that I could bring the third Gold medal for India. There were a lot of things running in my mind. There was a little bit of pressure. I wanted to perform very well for the Indian weightlifting team. I am extremely happy for my third gold medal and the fourth medal in the Commonwealth Games,” Chanu said.
Record-Breaking Performance
Chanu set a new Commonwealth record in the snatch by lifting 85 kg. In the clean and jerk section, she initially failed an attempt at 82 kg but successfully lifted it on her second try. She then produced a stunning 85 kg lift on her third attempt to set another Games and Commonwealth record. Competing for the gold, Chanu attempted 105 kg in the clean and jerk, lifted it successfully overhead, and secured the top spot on the podium.
Hat-trick of Golds
With this victory, Chanu added a third gold medal to her Commonwealth Games collection, following her wins at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022. Her performance in Glasgow also gave India its first gold medal of the 2026 edition. The weightlifter’s consistency across three Games underscores her dominance in the 48kg category.
Chanu’s achievement was widely celebrated as a testament to her dedication and resilience, especially after facing pressure to deliver for the Indian contingent. Her fourth CWG medal overall includes a silver from earlier games, highlighting her long-standing excellence on the Commonwealth stage.
