Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin Inaugurates ₹261 Crore Global Sports City in Chennai
In a significant move to bolster sports infrastructure, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin officially laid the foundation stone for a Global Sports City at Semmencherry in Chennai on Wednesday. This ambitious multi-sport project, developed by the Tamil Nadu government, carries an estimated cost of ₹261 crore and is poised to transform the city's athletic landscape.
Elevating Chennai's Sports Profile Beyond Traditional Disciplines
Addressing a gathering of sportspersons at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium during the Champions of Tamil Nadu programme, CM Stalin emphasized the project's broad impact. "The multi-sport infrastructure project will elevate Chennai's standing across disciplines beyond chess, cricket, hockey, and tennis, and strengthen Olympic training, sports tourism, and the hosting of international events," he stated. This initiative is designed to position Chennai as a premier hub for diverse sports activities, moving past its traditional strengths.
Government Support for Athletes Through Appointments and Incentives
In a parallel effort to support athletes, Stalin issued appointment orders to 178 sportspersons, including para-athletes, under the government's sports quota in public sector undertakings and government departments. This move aims to provide stable employment opportunities for talented individuals. Additionally, incentives were distributed to medal winners from national and international competitions, recognizing their achievements and encouraging future excellence.
Interaction with Athletes and Key Demands Presented
Following the ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin engaged in discussions with athletes, who presented a set of demands to the government. A primary request was the provision of air-conditioning facilities across all Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) hostels, highlighting the need for improved living conditions to support athlete training and well-being.
The Global Sports City project represents a major investment in Tamil Nadu's sports sector, aiming to enhance infrastructure, promote tourism, and foster athletic talent on a global scale. With its focus on multi-discipline development and athlete support, this initiative is expected to significantly boost Chennai's reputation as a leading sports destination in India.
