Mirabai Chanu claimed her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal on Sunday, delivering a commanding performance in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at Glasgow 2026. Her victory secured India's first gold medal of the Games, following compatriot Rishikanta Singh's silver in the men's 60kg category.
Chanu's Dominant Performance
Chanu, who had earlier set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch, began the clean and jerk section with an unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg. She returned for her second attempt and successfully lifted 82 kg, before producing another stunning performance with an 85 kg lift in her third attempt to set a new Games and Commonwealth record. Chanu then attempted 105 kg and successfully lifted it above her head, sealing the gold medal and completing a hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals.
PM Modi's Tribute
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mirabai Chanu, praising her consistency and calling her an inspiration. He wrote: "Another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting! Her performance also gave India its first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games, boosting the country's medal tally early in the competition.
India's Medal Haul Begins
Chanu's gold came after Rishikanta Singh's silver in the men's 60kg event earlier on Sunday. Singh's medal marked India's first podium finish at the Games, setting the stage for Chanu's triumphant performance. The Indian weightlifting contingent has shown strong form, with expectations of more medals in the coming days.
Chanu's journey has been inspirational, from her Olympic silver medal in Tokyo 2020 to her consistent dominance at the Commonwealth Games. Her latest gold medal underscores her dedication and skill, earning praise from leaders and fans alike.
