PM Modi to inaugurate National Volleyball Championship in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship in a virtual ceremony this Sunday, marking a significant sporting event in the holy city of Varanasi. The championship, which will run until January 11, will see the physical presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak at the Sigra Stadium.

Grand Inauguration and Distinguished Presence

The virtual inauguration by the Prime Minister is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, January 4, 2026. While PM Modi will join remotely, the event at Varanasi's Sigra Stadium will be graced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also serves as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Volleyball Association. This dual-layered inauguration highlights the importance of the championship at both national and state levels.

Scale and Significance of the Tournament

This edition of the championship is notable for its scale and historical context. A total of 58 teams from across the nation, comprising 30 men's and 28 women's squads, will compete for top honors. This translates to the participation of 1,044 athletes—540 men and 504 women. Sunil Kumar Tiwari, Secretary of the UP Volleyball Association, confirmed that this is the first time Varanasi is hosting this prestigious national event, and Uttar Pradesh is hosting it after a long gap since 1984.

The tournament's significance is further elevated by the expected presence of observers from the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The players selected based on their performance here will earn the right to represent India in international matches.

Notable Participants and Future Legacy

Beyond regular state teams, the competition will feature strong contenders like the Railways team and a unique combined team from all three wings of the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force). This adds a distinct competitive and patriotic flavor to the championship.

Looking beyond the immediate tournament, the event will also seed future sporting excellence. Organising Committee President and Varanasi Mayor, Ashok Tiwari, announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Uttar Pradesh Sports Department. This MoU aims to establish a Centre of Excellence at the Sigra Sports Complex, ensuring a lasting legacy for volleyball development in the region.

The event has already introduced its official mascots, Nandi and the Dolphin, symbolizing strength and grace, to build excitement among fans. With top-level political support, international oversight, and a focus on creating future infrastructure, the 72nd Senior National Volleyball Championship is poised to be a landmark event in India's sporting calendar.
