Pune Grand Tour Cycling Event Set for Massive Expansion and Annual Status

The Pune district administration and Public Works Department have announced ambitious plans to significantly expand the Pune Grand Tour, transforming it into a major annual international cycling spectacle. The road network for the event will be expanded from the current 437 kilometers to nearly 1,500 kilometers, creating one of India's most extensive professional cycling routes.

From One-Time Event to Annual Tradition

Pune collector Jitendra Dudi confirmed that the UCI 2.2-level Pune Grand Tour, which marked India's first hosting of such an international cycling competition, will now become a permanent fixture on the sporting calendar. The cycle tour became the trigger to deliver world-class roads within a stipulated timeframe, Dudi explained, highlighting how the event has catalyzed infrastructure development.

Contractors will maintain these upgraded roads throughout the year, with additional stretches planned for the expanded route receiving the same maintenance commitment. Everyone knows that the race will again pass through these roads next year, and hence everyone will ensure that roads remain in good condition throughout the year, Dudi emphasized, creating a sustainable model for infrastructure upkeep.

Rapid Transformation of Rural Roads

The project has already delivered remarkable results in rural areas where roads remained narrow, uneven, and potholed for years. Many villagers along the initial route expressed disbelief at witnessing rapid transformations within just three months, with previously problematic stretches turning into smooth ribbons of fresh tarmac.

A vegetable farmer from Mulshi taluka captured local sentiment perfectly: We have been waiting for good roads for years. This sentiment underscores how the cycling event has accelerated infrastructure improvements that communities had long awaited.

Engineering Excellence for Professional Cycling

The upgraded stretches include both state highways and rural roads, built with specific provisions required for professional cycling tracks. Bharatkumar Baviskar, superintending engineer at PWD Pune, detailed the technical specifications:

  • Road widening and layering executed strictly as per site-specific design requirements
  • Bituminous roads with cement-treated base courses implemented where necessary
  • Turns and curves improved for safe riding conditions
  • Safety crash barriers and galvanised iron mesh provided in ghat sections and on bridges
  • Dense bituminous macadam, bituminous macadam, mixed pavement material and base course layers laid after thorough inspection
  • Side shoulders strengthened and levelled to match main carriageway
  • Full-width pavers used to ensure uniform riding quality across entire carriageway

Strategic Contractor Selection and Long-Term Benefits

Contractor selection followed rigorous criteria including ability to complete work within 100 days, financial strength, availability of machinery, and proven track record. This approach ensured timely delivery of high-quality infrastructure.

Bharatkumar Baviskar highlighted the maintenance advantage: These roads will not require govt-funded maintenance for the next five years, as contractors are bound by a defect liability clause to maintain them till 2031. This creates significant cost savings while ensuring road quality.

Officials emphasized that the upgraded roads will serve dual purposes: supporting the international cycling event while significantly improving long-term connectivity and safety for rural and semi-urban commuters. The infrastructure development represents a sustainable model that benefits both sporting events and daily transportation needs.

Inspired by Global Standards, Adapted for Pune

Inspired by iconic races such as Tour de France, known for sweeping visuals of winding roads and scenic countryside, the Pune Grand Tour aims to offer a similar visual and sporting experience. The event combines rural landscapes, cleaner villages, and competitive road cycling, creating a unique sporting spectacle for the region.

While such cycling tracks are common in western countries, this is new for Pune. After this grand success, we plan to take it forward as a yearly event, said Dudi, who initiated the idea of hosting the international cycling event in Pune.

The expansion from 437km to 1,500km represents a significant scaling up of infrastructure ambitions. Having completed 437km, scaling it up to 1,500km will not be difficult, officials noted, expressing confidence in their ability to deliver expanded infrastructure within stipulated deadlines through close monitoring and strict enforcement of quality standards.
