Authorities from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. on Friday night, less than a mile from the championship golf course. The incident happened at a Walgreens parking lot nearby, resulting in two fatalities. Sheriff Rob Hardwick later confirmed that authorities had identified the suspect, who fled the scene.
The suspect's escape attempt led police dogs to track them onto the golf course property during the overnight search. In a statement, Sheriff Hardwick revealed that the suspect made contact with PGA Tour staff while moving through the area. "The suspect did make contact with PGA Tour employees on the property while fleeing from law enforcement," the sheriff explained.
Security Measures and Tournament Impact
Because of the active situation and the overnight police search for the suspect, tournament officials temporarily blocked fans from entering the grounds on Saturday morning. The PGA Tour worked closely with law enforcement throughout the night to ensure the event could continue safely.
In its official statement, the PGA Tour announced: "Due to operational considerations, gates for today's third round will now open at 9 am ET (1 pm GMT). We have worked closely with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office and appreciate the coordination and partnership from Sheriff Rob Hardwick and his team."
Despite the delayed spectator entry, tournament play itself began on time at 8:15 a.m. ET as originally scheduled. The statement clarified: "Please note, tee times will remain as previously scheduled, and all on-course hospitality venues will open at 11 am ET (3 pm GMT)."
Suspect Apprehension and Police Chase
Authorities reported that the suspect drove north in a stolen vehicle while attempting to escape. The police chase eventually ended in neighboring Nassau County when the vehicle crashed. The suspect then fled into nearby woods but was later located and taken into custody.
