Sports Meet Highlights Health Benefits, Pension Debate in Chikkamagaluru

JD(S) Leader Advocates for Sports and Pension Security at Chikkamagaluru Event

In a significant address at the district-level sports meet for government employees in Chikkamagaluru, JD(S) MLC SL Bhoje Gowda highlighted the profound positive impact of sports on both mental and physical well-being. The event, held at the Subhash Chandra Bose district stadium, was organized collaboratively by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat, youth empowerment and sports department, and the district government employees' association.

Emphasis on Daily Wellness Practices

Gowda stressed the critical importance of incorporating daily physical activities into routines to combat stress and enhance overall health. He specifically recommended daily walking and yoga as effective methods for stress relief, noting that regular participation in sports not only strengthens the body but also serves as a powerful tool to alleviate mental pressures. "Engaging in sports helps fortify our physical constitution and provides a much-needed outlet to reduce stress," he remarked during his speech.

Call to Revive Old Pension System

Beyond health advocacy, Gowda made a strong political appeal, urging the government to abandon the New Pension Scheme and reinstate the Old Pension System (OPS) for government employees. He argued that this change is essential to ensure a comfortable and secure retirement life for public servants, framing it as a matter of financial stability and dignity in their post-service years.

Support from Local Officials and MLA

Deputy Commissioner NM Nagaraj echoed the sentiment on sports, calling for regular organization of such meets to help employees who operate under constant work-related stress. He encouraged participants to momentarily set aside their daily responsibilities and engage in sports activities, emphasizing that the focus should be on participation rather than the outcome of winning or losing.

Chikkamagaluru MLA HD Thammaiah also addressed the gathering, describing health as a "great fortune for humans" that can be cultivated through sports involvement. He revealed that he has personally urged the Chief Minister to continue the OPS for government employees and pledged to raise the issue again in the legislative assembly to push for policy action.

Financial Commitment and Recognition

In a gesture of support for community infrastructure, MLA Thammaiah announced a contribution of Rs 10 lakh towards the construction of a community hall and promised additional assistance in the future. The event also included a moment of honor, where government employees who had participated in national-level sports meets were recognized for their achievements, underscoring the value placed on athletic excellence within the public sector.

The presence of HS Keerthan, CEO, added to the official weight of the occasion, highlighting the cross-departmental collaboration aimed at promoting wellness and addressing employee welfare concerns in Chikkamagaluru.
