Tamil Nadu's 'Ithu Namma Attam' Youth Sports Festival Launches in Sivaganga District
In a significant boost to grassroots sports development, the Tamil Nadu government's youth sports festival, 'Ithu Namma Attam', was officially inaugurated in Tirupattur, Sivaganga district, on Sunday. The event was launched by K R Periyakaruppan, Minister for Co-operation, marking its first-ever organization in the district by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority (SDAT).
Festival Structure and Initial Participation
The festival kicked off with competitions held across eight of the district's twelve blocks on Sunday, with the remaining four blocks scheduled to host events on Tuesday. Open to school and college students, the general public, and government employees aged 16 to 35 years, the initiative aims to foster widespread community engagement in sports.
As part of the broader 'Idhu Namma Attam 2026' campaign, the festival features a variety of sports, including athletics, kabaddi, handball, carrom, and tug-of-war, conducted in all panchayat unions across Tamil Nadu. An SDAT official noted a particularly strong response on Sunday, with women showing keen interest in tug-of-war and men participating actively in street cricket.
Focus on Traditional Games and Rural Appeal
The event emphasizes traditional village-style games, which have resonated deeply in the predominantly rural areas of Sivaganga district, excluding Karaikudi. The official highlighted that the rural focus and Sunday scheduling led to a turnout of thousands, underscoring the community's enthusiasm for such initiatives.
Minister Periyakaruppan emphasized the government's commitment to identifying and nurturing sporting talent statewide through various schemes. He stated that sports are crucial for promoting social progress, physical fitness, and mental wellbeing among the younger generation.
Inclusive Competitions and Rewards
In a move towards inclusivity, separate competitions are organized for persons with disabilities, featuring events such as:
- 100m for physically challenged participants
- Shot put for visually challenged individuals
- 100m for intellectually challenged participants
- 100m for hearing-impaired participants
A total of 660 winners will advance to district-level competitions, with prize money ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 75,000 and certificates awarded to victors, incentivizing participation and excellence.
This festival not only revitalizes traditional sports but also aligns with broader efforts to enhance youth development and community cohesion through athletic engagement in Tamil Nadu.
