The United States booked their place in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Thursday. A first-half goal from Flo Balogun and an 82nd-minute strike from Malik Tillman sealed the win, setting up a pre-quarterfinal clash against Belgium.
Balogun's Brilliance and Red Card
Flo Balogun was the star of the first half, constantly threatening the Bosnian defense. In the 45th minute, he received a pass from Sergino Dest that took a deflection off Bosnian defender Muharemovic before Balogun drove it past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. The goal was his third of the tournament, making him only the second USA player to score three goals in a single World Cup, according to tournament statistics. Balogun also hit the crossbar moments later as the USA dominated possession with 62% and recorded 19 touches in the opposition box, 14 of which were his own.
However, Balogun's night ended early in the 61st minute when he was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Muharemovic, leaving the USA with ten men for the final half-hour.
Tillman Seals the Win
Despite being a man down, the USA extended their lead in the 82nd minute. Malik Tillman found the back of the net with a composed finish, ensuring the scoreline remained 2-0 until the final whistle. Bosnia had few clear chances, with a long-range effort from Katic in the second half being their only notable attempt. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko was substituted early in the second half after appearing to clutch his quadricep.
USA's Path Forward
With this win, the USA advanced to the round of 16, where they will face Belgium. The team's fast-paced gameplay and ability to create chances in the opposition box were key factors in their victory, according to match analysts. The win also marked a milestone for Balogun, who became the second USA player to score three goals in a World Cup, as reported by tournament officials.
