Western Railway Motorman Fatally Hit During Shunting Duty

A motorman employed with Western Railway lost his life in a tragic accident at Virar station. The incident occurred on Saturday evening while the motorman was performing his official duties at the railway yard.

Officials confirmed the identity of the deceased as Motorman Dilip Kumar Sahu. The fatal accident took place at approximately 8 pm on Saturday within the premises of Virar station.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Sahu was engaged in a shunting operation, which involves moving trains between tracks. His task at the time was to pull a suburban train rake to platform number 4A at Virar.

While he was crossing the railway tracks as part of this activity, he was struck by the Amritsar Express, a long-distance train passing through the station. The loco pilot and the train manager of the express train immediately reported the incident to the Virar station master, setting standard emergency and procedural protocols into motion.

Aftermath and Support for the Family

The last rites for Dilip Kumar Sahu were conducted on Sunday afternoon. A spokesperson for Western Railway addressed the support being provided to the bereaved family.

The railway administration has extended several forms of assistance to Sahu's family. This includes funeral assistance, an ex-gratia payment, and the settlement of all applicable benefits.

In a significant measure of support, the official added that a compassionate appointment will be offered to one eligible member of Sahu's family. This policy is designed to provide livelihood security to the dependents of railway employees who die in harness.

The accident has cast a somber mood over the Western Railway community, highlighting the inherent risks faced by personnel working on the tracks.
