India's rising badminton stars Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma showcased their exceptional talent on Friday, both securing spots in the women's singles semifinals of the prestigious Syed Modi India International tournament in Lucknow.
The teenage sensations demonstrated why they're considered the future of Indian badminton with impressive quarterfinal victories that highlighted both their skill and determination.
Tanvi Sharma's Commanding Performance
Sixteen-year-old Tanvi Sharma continued her remarkable tournament run with a decisive victory over Lo Sin Yan Happy, needing just 38 minutes to secure her semifinal berth. The young prodigy, who had previously stunned former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan, displayed exceptional court coverage and precision shot placement throughout the match.
Tanvi dominated the opening game with a convincing 21-13 scoreline, moving swiftly across the court and executing sharp placements that left her opponent struggling to respond. However, the second game presented a different challenge as the young shuttler faced increased pressure.
Despite building an early 6-2 lead, Tanvi encountered difficulties as unforced errors and nervous moments allowed her opponent to close the gap. Nevertheless, the teenager maintained her composure to clinch the closely contested second game 21-19, demonstrating mental toughness beyond her years.
Unnati Hooda's Hard-Fought Victory
In contrast to Tanvi's relatively straightforward win, Unnati Hooda faced a much sterner test against compatriot Rakshitha Ramraj. The match evolved into a thrilling three-game encounter that showcased the depth of talent in Indian women's badminton.
Unnati started strongly, taking the first game 21-15 with confident play. However, Ramraj mounted a strong comeback in the second game, leveling the match with a 21-13 victory that set up a dramatic decider.
The final game saw both players pushing their limits, but Unnati ultimately prevailed with a 21-16 scoreline, securing her place in the semifinals after an intense battle that tested both her physical and mental resilience.
Road to the Finals
With their quarterfinal victories secured, both young Indian shuttlers now look ahead to crucial semifinal matches. Unnati Hooda will face fourth-seeded Turkish shuttler Neslihan Arin for a coveted spot in the tournament final, presenting another opportunity for the Indian talent to showcase her skills against international competition.
In men's singles action, former world number one K. Srikanth advanced to the semifinals after his opponent Priyanshu Rajawat was forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury. The match ended with Srikanth leading 21-14, 11-4 when Rajawat retired from the contest.
