Ashwin Voices Strong Displeasure Over Arshdeep's Absence
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has openly challenged the team management's decision to exclude Arshdeep Singh from the playing eleven. This criticism comes after the left-arm pacer missed the first two ODIs against New Zealand in Vadodara and Rajkot.
Arshdeep remains part of the squad for the ongoing three-match series. However, his continued absence from the field has clearly upset Ashwin, who has consistently advocated for the young bowler.
A Pattern of Exclusion Raises Concerns
The 39-year-old Ashwin believes the Indian think-tank must recognize how such decisions affect a player's confidence and morale. He has been a vocal supporter of Arshdeep for a long time, repeatedly speaking against his frequent omission from the side.
Arshdeep Singh, aged 26, holds the distinction of being India's leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals. He has also claimed 22 wickets in his 14 ODI appearances so far. Despite these credentials, the management preferred Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna as the primary pace attack in the initial matches against New Zealand.
World Cup Preparations or Simple Neglect?
Some speculate that Arshdeep was rested with the upcoming T20 World Cup in mind. The tournament is scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. Yet, under head coach Gautam Gambhir, Arshdeep has not secured a regular spot in the T20I lineup either.
Since mid-2024, he has featured in only five out of thirteen T20 internationals. This sporadic selection raises questions about his standing within the team setup.
Ashwin's Detailed Critique on YouTube
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin analyzed the possible tactical reasoning behind the selections. He acknowledged the need for specific bowlers in certain conditions but emphasized that Arshdeep's situation was being completely overlooked.
"The contest is between the bowlers. For South Africa, you need a hit-the-deck bowler. Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana both need match experience, so I can understand the thinking," Ashwin stated. "But no one is thinking about Arshdeep Singh. Who will stand in his shoes and think? This is not about how much he has played and how much he hasn't played."
Ashwin then shifted focus to the psychological impact of such decisions on fast bowlers. He painted a vivid picture of Arshdeep's potential mental state.
"What must he be thinking right now? He has done so much, yet he is still fighting for his spot. Whenever he plays next, he will be rusty. No matter what you say, this is a game of confidence," Ashwin added. "Why does this happen to the bowlers at all times? It never happens with the batters."
Calling for Automatic Selection Status
The veteran spinner argued that Arshdeep has earned the right to be an automatic pick based on his past performances. Ashwin drew from his own international career experiences, where he faced similar situations.
"I have been in this position, so I know how it is. This is why I am fighting for Arshdeep Singh," Ashwin explained. "Whenever you have given him the ball, he has performed for you. Allow him to walk into the playing XI with his head held high. He deserves this, boss."
Ashwin also questioned the logic behind potentially playing Arshdeep only in the final match of the series. He found little merit in this approach.
"Now people are saying he will play the third ODI. What is the point? He didn't play the first two ODIs, and why did that happen? What will that do to his confidence?" Ashwin remarked pointedly.
Series Decider Awaits in Indore
The three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand is currently tied. The decisive final match is set for Sunday, January 18, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. All eyes will be on whether Arshdeep Singh finally gets his opportunity or remains on the sidelines.
Ashwin's strong comments have ignited a fresh debate about player management and confidence building within the Indian cricket team. The situation highlights the delicate balance between tactical planning and maintaining a player's morale.
