Australia Hit by Injuries Ahead of India ODI Series: Inglis, Zampa Out
Australia's Inglis, Zampa to miss ODI series opener vs India

The Australian cricket team has encountered significant setbacks just before the start of their highly anticipated One-Day International series against India. The hosts will be without two key players for the opening match due to a combination of injury and personal reasons.

Double Blow for Australian Squad

Wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the first ODI after sustaining a calf strain during a training session in Perth. In a separate development, premier spinner Adam Zampa will also be unavailable for the series opener, as he awaits the birth of his second child with his wife Harriet.

To fill these gaps, Cricket Australia has called up two replacements. Wicket-keeper Josh Philippe steps in for Inglis, marking his potential first ODI appearance since facing the West Indies back in 2021. Meanwhile, spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has been added to the squad to bolster the spin-bowling options in Zampa's absence.

Carey's Absence and Team Reshuffle

Complicating matters further, first-choice wicket-keeper Alex Carey is set to miss the opening match as well. He is participating in South Australia's Sheffield Shield clash against Queensland, which is part of his preparations for the upcoming Ashes series. Carey is expected to rejoin the ODI squad ahead of the second match.

This series of absences presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Australian side. It forces a reshuffle but also allows the team management to test new faces and manage player workloads ahead of a crucial contest against a formidable Indian team.

Recovery Timelines and Series Schedule

Cricket Australia remains hopeful that Josh Inglis will recover in time for the third ODI, scheduled for October 25 in Sydney. Adam Zampa is expected to be available for selection for the second ODI in Adelaide on October 23.

With Zampa out, Matthew Kuhnemann is in line to play his first ODI since 2022. Other spin options available for captain Mitchell Marsh include all-rounders Matt Short and Cooper Connolly.

The full schedule for the Australia vs India limited-overs series is:

  • First ODI: October 19, Perth
  • Second ODI: October 23, Adelaide
  • Third ODI: October 25, Sydney
  • First T20I: October 29, Canberra
  • Second T20I: October 31, Melbourne
  • Third T20I: November 2, Hobart
  • Fourth T20I: November 6, Gold Coast
  • Fifth T20I: November 8, Brisbane

The Australian squad, led by Mitchell Marsh, now includes a mix of experienced campaigners and fresh talent, setting the stage for an intriguing battle as India looks to start the series on a strong note against a depleted but determined Australian side.
