Rangnick Hails Spain as Potential World Champions

Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick has praised Spain as a potential world champion following his side's 3-0 defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 on Thursday. Speaking after the match in Los Angeles, Rangnick described Spain as the strongest team Austria has faced in the tournament, according to French outlet L'Equipe.

"Spain undoubtedly delivered their best performance of the tournament today, by far. And, I might be taking a risk in saying this, but I wouldn't be surprised if we had faced not only the reigning European champions, but also the future world champions. If they continue to play at this level, it will be extremely difficult to beat the Spanish," Rangnick said during a press conference.

Austria's Resilience Despite Setbacks

Despite the defeat, Rangnick noted that Austria remained competitive until Spain's second goal. He credited his players for showing resilience despite several obstacles, including the withdrawal of Christoph Baumgartner, an injury to Phillipp Mwene, and Stefan Posch's broken jaw. "Until their second goal, we were still in the game. With a bit of luck, we could even have hoped to equalise," he added.

Spain dominated the match, winning 3-0 to secure their first World Cup knockout victory in regular or extra time since winning the title in 2010. Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, while Pedro Porro netted his first international goal. Marc Cucurella provided two assists, and Spain kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet, having not conceded a goal in the tournament.

Historic Milestones for Spain

Spain controlled possession throughout, with goalkeeper Alexander Schlager making several saves for Austria. Teenagers Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi became the first Under-20 duo to start a World Cup knockout match for one nation since Brazil's Pele and Jose Altafini in 1958. Spain will face Portugal in the Round of 16, while Austria's campaign ends after reaching the knockout stage for the first time since 1954.
