FC Goa Midfielder Ayush Chhetri Forced to Withdraw from National Team Camp Following Concussion
In a significant blow to India's football preparations, FC Goa midfielder Ayush Chhetri has been ruled out of the national team camp due to a concussion sustained during Sunday's Indian Super League clash against Chennaiyin FC. The club's medical staff confirmed that Chhetri suffered the head injury early in the second half, forcing him to leave the field in the 57th minute.
Hospitalization and Mandatory Rest Period
The young midfielder was immediately transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. According to FIFA's strict concussion protocols, Chhetri now requires a period of relative rest before he can be cleared to return to competitive football.
"As per FIFA guidelines, concussion treatment is underpinned by relative rest. His body and mind need suitable time to recover," explained a senior club official, emphasizing the importance of proper recovery for head injuries.
Impact on National Team Selection
Chhetri was one of two FC Goa players selected by head coach Khalid Jamil for India's crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 final round qualifier against Hong Kong on March 31. His absence creates a significant gap in the midfield options available to the national team.
FC Goa captain Sandesh Jhingan, who scored the late equalizer against Chennaiyin FC, is scheduled to join the national camp in Kochi on Monday as planned.
Coach's Reaction and Match Analysis
FC Goa head coach Manolo Marquez expressed concern for his player during the post-match media interaction. "Ayush is in the hospital," Marquez confirmed. "He had a knock and was taken to the hospital. I hope he can attend the national team camp. He deserves to be with the national team."
The Spanish tactician was speaking after his team staged another dramatic comeback to secure a 1-1 draw against Chennaiyin FC, thanks to Jhingan's late header. Goa struggled initially but found momentum after strategic substitutions around the hour mark, including Abdul Rabeeh, Raynier Fernandes, and Harsh Patre.
"I think the score is fair because we reacted only after the goal, which could have been avoided. We didn't play a good game," Marquez analyzed candidly. "This is not to say anyone is guilty, but we are always with the same 11 and the starters are very comfortable."
Positive Bench Impact and Team Performance
Marquez highlighted the crucial contribution from his substitutes in changing the game's dynamics. "Today, I am very satisfied with the players who entered from the bench, all of them, because they changed the game completely."
The coach also defended his team's overall performance this season, noting their unbeaten run after six matches. "We are unbeaten after six matches, I think the players have a lot of merit. I know there are three consecutive draws (East Bengal, Punjab, Chennaiyin), all away. People don't know how difficult it is for one team with just two foreigners."
Marquez concluded with a positive assessment: "They can say whatever they want, but ten points after six games unbeaten, for me, is very good."
The concussion protocol will now determine Chhetri's recovery timeline, with his absence from the national camp representing both a personal disappointment and a tactical challenge for the Indian team management ahead of their important qualifier.
