In a significant move to bolster cricket infrastructure in the region, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approved enhanced support for the UT Cricket Association (UTCA) in Chandigarh. The decision, aimed at upgrading ground maintenance and training facilities, was finalized during a crucial meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
Key Approvals for Ground and Training Infrastructure
The newly sanctioned support includes vital equipment for ground management. The BCCI has approved the provision of an additional super sopper, a specialized device crucial for swiftly removing standing water from cricket grounds after rain. This is complemented by new groundcovers, which protect the pitch and outfield from adverse weather, ensuring fewer match disruptions and better pitch quality.
Furthermore, in a major development for local cricketers, the national board has also given its nod for the construction of an indoor cricket facility in Chandigarh. Work on this project is slated to begin shortly. This facility is strategically planned to provide year-round training and practice opportunities, mitigating the impact of seasonal weather and allowing players to hone their skills continuously.
High-Level Meeting and Presentation
The approvals were secured following a recent meeting in Mumbai involving key cricket administrators. Sanjay Tandon, the founder president of UTCA and a member of the BCCI Women's Premier League governing council, met with top BCCI officials. The delegation included ICC chairman Jay Shah, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla.
During the interaction, Tandon presented a detailed account of UTCA's progress since its affiliation with the BCCI. He shared a book titled ‘From affiliation towards excellence – UTCA Chandigarh (2019–2025)’, which documents the association's journey and outlines the advancements made in local cricket facilities and structure over the years.
A Step Towards Excellence for Chandigarh Cricket
Sanjay Tandon expressed his gratitude to the BCCI for its continued support and for approving the critical infrastructure projects. These developments mark a pivotal step in elevating Chandigarh's cricket ecosystem. The combination of advanced ground maintenance tools and a dedicated indoor training center is expected to:
- Minimize rain-related delays and cancellations of matches.
- Provide a world-class practice environment for local talent.
- Strengthen the player development pathway in the union territory.
The infrastructural boost underscores the BCCI's commitment to nurturing cricket at the grassroots and regional levels, with Chandigarh poised to benefit significantly from these investments in the coming years.
