The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to conduct a thorough review of the national team's dismal performance in T20 internationals following the ongoing ODI series against England. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development on Friday, citing the team's recent string of losses, including a 0-2 defeat to Ireland and a 0-3 deficit in the five-match T20 series against England.
BCCI Secretary Confirms Post-ODI Review
Speaking to reporters, Saikia stated, "The BCCI will review the team's performance in T20s after the ODI series. We need to assess what went wrong and take corrective measures." The review is expected to involve head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, among other stakeholders.
India's T20 campaign has been marred by inconsistent batting, lackluster bowling, and poor fielding. The team managed to win only one of their last five T20 matches, raising concerns about their preparation and strategy ahead of major tournaments.
Series Defeats Mount Pressure
The 0-2 loss to Ireland, considered a minnow in international cricket, was a major embarrassment for the Indian team. This was followed by a dominant performance from England, who have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the T20 series. England's aggressive batting and disciplined bowling exposed India's vulnerabilities, particularly in the middle overs.
According to statistics, India's run rate in the powerplay overs has dropped to 7.2 in the series, compared to England's 9.8. Additionally, India's bowling attack has conceded an average of 10.5 runs per over in the death overs, the worst among all teams in the series.
Review to Focus on Strategy and Selection
The BCCI review is likely to address several key areas, including team selection, batting order, and bowling combinations. Sources indicate that the board may also discuss the workload management of key players and the effectiveness of the coaching staff. Gambhir, who took over as head coach earlier this year, has faced criticism for the team's lack of adaptability.
"We have a talented squad, but we need to execute our plans better," Saikia added. "The review will help us identify gaps and ensure we are better prepared for future assignments."
ODI Series Provides Context
The ongoing ODI series against England, which India trail 1-2, has further highlighted the team's struggles in limited-overs cricket. While the ODI format is separate from T20s, the review will consider the overall performance of the team across formats. The BCCI is keen to address these issues before the next T20 World Cup.
Former cricketers and analysts have also weighed in, calling for a more aggressive approach in T20s. Many have pointed to the success of teams like England and Australia, who have embraced a fearless brand of cricket.
The BCCI has not yet set a date for the review meeting, but it is expected to take place shortly after the conclusion of the ODI series. Meanwhile, the Indian team will look to salvage pride in the remaining T20 matches against England.
