BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board will hold a review meeting with core team members after the ODI series concludes on July 19, following India's 3-0 T20I series loss to England. The meeting will focus solely on the team's on-field performances and corrective measures.
Series loss termed 'bad phase'
Speaking to ANI, Saikia described the series defeat as a "purely bad phase" and expressed hope that the team would regain form in the upcoming ODIs. "The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the ongoing series against England. However, this is not something abnormal and can happen in international cricket," he said.
Saikia added, "Once the ODI series gets over on July 19 and the team comes back, we will have a review meeting with core members of the team to discuss what went wrong in England. Since there is an ODI series, we are hoping that the team will be back in good form."
Agenda strictly performance-based
Outlining the meeting's agenda, Saikia emphasized that discussions would be strictly about the team's performance and course correction. "Strictly about the performance of the team and how course correction can be done with regard to shortfalls. Nothing else will be discussed," he stated.
Disappointing T20I campaign
India's T20I campaign in England and Ireland was marred by poor results. After losing the opening match to a no-result, India suffered a nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I in Bristol, giving England an unassailable 3-0 lead. Earlier, India had lost the second T20I by four wickets and the third by 125 runs, where they were bowled out for 76 while chasing 202. The team also suffered a clean sweep against Ireland in T20Is earlier this year.
Second successive T20I series defeat
This series marks India's second consecutive T20I series loss after a 2-0 defeat to Ireland, which was India's first bilateral T20I series loss to Ireland. Both setbacks have occurred since Shreyas Iyer replaced Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. Despite Iyer's unbeaten 80 off 49 balls in Bristol, India's total of 158/7 proved insufficient as England chased it down in 13.5 overs, led by captain Harry Brook's 79 off 35 and Phil Salt's 59 off 42. The victory secured England's first bilateral T20I series win over India in a contest of two or more matches.
Focus shifts to ODIs
India will aim to end the T20I leg on a positive note before shifting focus to the ODI series. The review meeting will take place after the ODIs conclude on July 19.
