Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has acknowledged that his side enters Friday's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Spain as underdogs, but he remains confident that the Red Devils can challenge the European champions. Speaking to Reuters, Garcia emphasized his team's attacking prowess and determination to compete against one of the tournament's favorites.
Garcia Confident Despite Underdog Status
"We know we are playing one of the favourites. Spain are probably the best at ball possession and they have been playing in a recognisable way for 15 or 20 years. But we have a great team. We are the second-highest scorers in the World Cup and we are facing the team with the highest expected goals. We think we can do it," Garcia stated. He added, "Even if we are the underdogs, we will do everything we can to give them a run for their money."
Belgium's Path to the Quarter-Finals
Belgium's journey to the last eight included a mixed group-stage campaign. They drew 1-1 with Egypt and played out a goalless draw against Iran before securing a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand. In the knockout rounds, they edged past Senegal 3-2 in the Round of 32 and defeated co-hosts USA 4-1 in the Round of 16.
Spain's Formidable Record
Spain enter the quarter-final in outstanding form. The reigning European champions have not conceded a goal in the tournament, keeping a record six consecutive FIFA World Cup clean sheets. After topping Group H, they eliminated Austria in the Round of 32 and narrowly defeated Portugal in the Round of 16.
Historical Context and Stakes
Spain aim to reach the semi-finals for the first time since winning the World Cup in 2010. Belgium, who earned bronze in 2018, seek to advance to the semi-finals with veterans Romelu Lukaku and Kevin de Bruyne providing crucial leadership. The match promises to be a clash between Spain's possession-based style and Belgium's attacking firepower.
