Jacob Bethell played a sensational knock of 86 off 46 balls, laced with five sixes and five fours, to steer England to a four-wicket victory over India in the first match of the series. England chased down the target of 191 with an over to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
England's Chase Dominated by Bethell's Power-Hitting
Chasing 191, England got off to a brisk start but lost early wickets. However, Bethell anchored the innings with aggressive strokeplay, reaching his fifty in just 28 balls. He found able support from Liam Livingstone, who contributed a quickfire 32 off 18 balls, as the duo added 78 runs for the fourth wicket to bring the required rate under control.
India's bowlers struggled to contain Bethell, who targeted the boundaries with ease. Spinners and pacers alike were taken apart as Bethell brought up his century stand in just 55 balls for the fourth wicket. England eventually reached 191/6 in 19 overs, with Bethell remaining unbeaten until the final over.
India's Innings: A Competitive Total
Earlier, India posted 190/5 in their 20 overs after being put in to bat. Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 68 off 38 balls, while captain Rohit Sharma made 45 off 30. The pair added 89 runs for the second wicket, setting a solid foundation. However, England's bowlers, led by Jofra Archer (2/32) and Adil Rashid (1/28), pulled things back in the death overs, restricting India to a manageable total.
According to England captain Jos Buttler, "Jacob's innings was exceptional. He took the game away from India single-handedly. The way he paced the chase was brilliant."
Series Opener Sets the Tone
The victory gives England a crucial early lead in the multi-match series. The second match is scheduled to be played at the same venue in two days' time. India will look to bounce back and level the series, while England will aim to build on this momentum.
Bethell's knock was the highest individual score in the match and earned him the Player of the Match award. His ability to clear the boundaries at will proved to be the difference between the two sides.
