Atlanta [US], June 24 (ANI): Ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 final group stage clash against Haiti, Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi highlighted the significance of the team's 1-1 draw against five-time champions Brazil, calling it a "benchmark" for the squad. Ouahbi expressed confidence in the team's ability to contribute meaningfully to world football.
Morocco's Strong Campaign So Far
The 2022 World Cup semifinalists have continued their impressive form in the current tournament. After a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Brazil, they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Scotland. With four points from two matches, Morocco currently occupies the second spot in the group standings. A win against Haiti on Thursday in Atlanta would guarantee their place in the round of 32.
Speaking ahead of the match, as quoted by Goal.com, Ouahbi stated, "The Brazil game was an important benchmark for us, but we are not looking too far ahead at the moment." He emphasized the need to stay focused on the immediate challenge.
Benchmark Matches and Future Prospects
Ouahbi acknowledged that several teams are being discussed as potential threats, including the Netherlands, but also highlighted other strong opponents. "Many people are talking about the Netherlands, but there is also Japan. These benchmark matches help us for what is coming, whether it is the Netherlands, Japan, France, Portugal or Argentina," he said. The coach stressed that the team is prepared: "The most important thing is that we are ready, and I think we have shown that we are capable of offering a lot."
Team Selection and Goalkeeper Fitness
Regarding the fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Ouahbi downplayed concerns but hinted at possible changes for the Haiti match. "We will most likely qualify, but we still have to win the next match," he said. "I will rely on all 26 players in the squad, and you know the names." The coach emphasized the importance of winning to top the group: "Our aim is to win, so we will field the best possible line-up. There are some decisions that have to be made. We want to win and finish the group stage at the top. First, we have to win, and then we will see where that leads us."
