Record-breaking partnership demolishes Indian bowling
Jos Buttler and Harry Brook unleashed a brutal assault on the Indian bowlers, smashing record-breaking centuries to power England to a mammoth total of 232 for 6 in the fifth T20I at Southampton. The duo added 168 runs for the third wicket, the highest partnership for England against India in T20Is, as the hosts leveled the five-match series 2-2 with a commanding 75-run victory.
Buttler, the England captain, played a breathtaking knock of 110 off 56 balls, his second T20I century, laced with 9 fours and 6 sixes. Brook was equally destructive, scoring 102 off 49 balls, his maiden T20I hundred, hitting 8 fours and 7 sixes. The pair took the Indian attack to the cleaners, particularly targeting the spinners in the middle overs.
India's chase falters despite early promise
Chasing a stiff target of 233, India got off to a flying start with openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli adding 54 runs in just 4.3 overs. However, the innings lost momentum after Rohit fell for 28 off 16 balls. Kohli continued to fight, scoring a gritty 72 off 52 balls, but found little support from the other end. India eventually finished at 157 for 8 in their 20 overs, falling short by 75 runs.
England's bowlers, led by Chris Jordan (3 for 27) and Adil Rashid (2 for 22), kept the Indian batsmen in check after the powerplay. The required run rate climbed steadily, and India never recovered from the early loss of wickets.
Records tumbled in Southampton
The match saw several records being set and broken. Buttler's 110 was the highest individual score by an England captain in T20Is, while Brook's 102 was the fastest T20I century by an English batsman, off just 47 balls. Their 168-run stand is now the highest third-wicket partnership in T20Is for England, surpassing the previous record of 161 by Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan.
According to statistics, this was also the highest total ever posted by England against India in T20Is, beating their previous best of 215 for 6 in 2018. For India, it was their biggest defeat in terms of runs in T20Is against England.
Series leveled with one match to go
The win leveled the series 2-2, setting up a thrilling series decider at Trent Bridge on Saturday. England, after losing the first two matches, have staged a remarkable comeback, winning the next two. India, on the other hand, will be disappointed after being in a strong position to seal the series.
"It was a special innings from Jos and Harry," said England captain Jos Buttler after the match. "They took the game away from India and set up a huge total. The bowlers also did a great job defending it." India captain Rohit Sharma conceded that his team was outplayed. "We were not good enough with the ball and in the field. We let them score too many runs and then lost early wickets in the chase. We need to regroup for the final match."
