Chennaiyin FC's Home Pitch Under Spotlight Ahead of ISL Season

Chennaiyin FC, the two-time Indian Super League champions, are preparing for a crucial run of home fixtures at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai. Their first home game of the season is scheduled against FC Goa on March 22. However, with just 11 days remaining until the match, the pitch condition has raised significant concerns among observers.

Pitch Condition and Restoration Efforts

Currently, the playing surface exhibits noticeable dry patches due to surface wear and tear, with sprinklers visible in certain areas. This has prompted worries about whether the ground will be in optimal condition for the upcoming games. A senior Chennaiyin FC official addressed these concerns, stating that work is progressing at full capacity to address the issues.

"Work is underway in full flow and we have deployed additional resources and machinery," the official told TOI. "We are working with our vendor to lay a fresh layer of grass to ensure we are ready for the first match. In due course, we hope that the pitch will get better."

The club is set to play five consecutive home matches at this venue, making the timely preparation of the surface absolutely critical for their performance and scheduling.

Confidence from Authorities

Member secretary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), J Meghanatha Reddy, also expressed strong confidence that the ground will be match-ready by the deadline. "They are working on it. The pitch will be ready in superb, playable condition for the ISL from March 22. This is not the first time we are doing it. We do it every year," Reddy assured.

The stadium recently hosted concerts and corporate functions, which have taken a toll on the playing surface. While Chennaiyin FC had expressed serious concerns about playing their home games at the JLN stadium due to these events, Reddy dismissed suggestions that non-sports activities had adversely affected the pitch.

Revenue Generation and Maintenance Responsibilities

Reddy explained that hosting such events is a common practice worldwide to generate revenue, as maintaining a stadium involves substantial costs. "These are two mutually exclusive events. Worldwide, it is an accepted and increasingly adopted practice to generate revenue from stadiums because running a facility like this comes at a huge cost," he said.

He further clarified that the authorities closely monitor the installation and dismantling processes of events held at the venue to prevent damage. "As an authority, we watched everything very closely from installation to dismantling. We have our own teams supervising the process and we did not find any damage whatsoever to the stadium," Reddy added.

Regarding maintenance responsibilities, Reddy stated that according to the agreement between SDAT and Chennaiyin FC, the club manages the upkeep and maintenance of the pitch for about eight months each year. "The overall maintenance of the pitch is with the CFC team, so we have no direct role in that," he explained.

He noted that restoration work had already commenced after the recent events, with expectations that everything would be perfect by match time. "Soon after the concert, they started working on it. By the time we approach the match, everything should be perfect," he reiterated, emphasizing that concerts had "not disturbed their maintenance in any way."
