Kansas City Chiefs Re-Enter Trent Williams Trade Talks as 49ers Negotiations Stall
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again closely observing the left tackle market, with a new report indicating the team has significant interest in trading for San Francisco 49ers veteran Trent Williams if contract discussions between the player and his current team fail to progress. This development underscores Kansas City's ongoing quest for long-term stability on the blind side of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Chiefs' Persistent Search for Veteran Tackle Solutions
Despite drafting Josh Simmons in the first round last year, injuries and a midseason absence disrupted his rookie campaign, leaving the Chiefs with lingering uncertainty at the left tackle position. This instability has prompted the franchise to actively monitor veteran options, with Trent Williams, one of the NFL's most decorated tackles, re-emerging as a prime target as negotiations in San Francisco remain unresolved.
According to Jason La Canfora of Casino.com on April 6, the Chiefs would be "ready to pounce" on a trade opportunity if Williams and the 49ers cannot reach a new agreement. The report emphasizes that Kansas City still prefers a veteran presence at left tackle, even after investing a first-round pick in Simmons, signaling genuine interest beyond routine scouting.
Contract Dynamics and Trade Speculation Intensify
Trade rumors gained momentum after the 49ers declined to exercise the $10 million option bonus Williams was due on March 20. This decision increased Williams' 2026 salary cap number to approximately $47 million, but sources informed Adam Schefter that the team was "not overly concerned about it" and intended to rework his contract before the NFL draft in April.
49ers General Manager John Lynch expressed optimism in March, stating, "We've had good communication throughout. I would say in the last week it's kind of intensified and feel like we're on the precipice of something good happening, but we'll see. Don't want to make any statements that, like, 'Hey, we're right there,' because these things have felt like that before, but I do feel like we're in good communication and hopeful."
Williams is entering a contract year and will turn 38 in July. Although the 49ers reworked his deal two years ago, talks have reopened this offseason, and despite recent progress, no final agreement has been reached, keeping trade speculation alive. Notably, Kansas City finished second in the Williams sweepstakes in 2021 before San Francisco signed him to a six-year, $138.1 million contract.
Chiefs' Tackle History and Current Roster Challenges
The Chiefs' renewed pursuit of Williams is rooted in their recent tackle history. Orlando Brown Jr. held the left tackle role for two seasons before departing in 2023. Donovan Smith temporarily filled the gap during the Super Bowl LVIII run but did not return. In 2025, Kansas City rotated multiple starters, including Joe Thuney shifting outside, yet the position remained unstable throughout the year.
Simmons' rookie contract extends through 2028, but he missed time for personal reasons and later suffered a season-ending wrist injury on Thanksgiving, raising doubts about his immediate reliability. The team also signed Jaylon Moore to a two-year deal in 2025, though he could potentially move to right tackle following Jawaan Taylor's release.
La Canfora also mentioned Taylor Decker as a fallback option, as the longtime Lions tackle requested a release after stalled negotiations and is expected to play in 2026. However, the Chiefs appear more focused on Williams. If talks in San Francisco break down, Kansas City could finally secure the elite left tackle it has pursued for years, bolstering their offensive line for future campaigns.
