The Delhi High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on a plea filed by star wrestler Vinesh Phogat, challenging her exclusion from the selection trials for the upcoming Asian Games. The court has sought a response from the WFI within three weeks.
Background of the Case
Vinesh Phogat, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Olympic medalist, had approached the court after she was not included in the list of wrestlers eligible for the Asian Games trials. The trials are scheduled to be held next month to select the Indian contingent for the Asian Games.
Phogat's lawyer argued that her exclusion was arbitrary and without any valid reason, especially considering her past performances and achievements. The petition claimed that the decision violated her fundamental rights as a sportsperson.
Court's Directive
Justice Rekha Palli, while hearing the matter, directed the WFI to file a counter-affidavit within three weeks. The court also listed the case for further hearing after the response is filed. The judge noted that the matter required consideration and issued the notice accordingly.
The WFI, represented by its counsel, stated that the selection process was transparent and based on the current form and fitness of the athletes. However, the court maintained that the petitioner deserved a fair hearing.
Impact on Indian Wrestling
This development comes at a crucial time for Indian wrestling, with the Asian Games being a major event for the sport. Vinesh Phogat is one of the most decorated female wrestlers in India, and her participation is seen as vital for the country's medal hopes.
The case has also sparked discussions about the selection procedures followed by the WFI and the need for transparency in the process. Several other wrestlers have also expressed concerns over the criteria used for trials.
The next hearing is expected to take place after the WFI submits its response. Until then, the wrestling community awaits clarity on Phogat's participation in the Asian Games.
