Colombia began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over tournament debutants Uzbekistan at Mexico City Stadium on Wednesday. Nestor Lorenzo's side showcased their experience and quality to claim three crucial points in Group K.
First Half Dominance
From the outset, Colombia controlled the game with sustained possession against Fabio Cannavaro's Uzbekistan. The first real chance came in the 33rd minute when Luis Diaz broke through the defense, but his angled shot hit the far post.
The breakthrough arrived in the 40th minute. Jefferson Lerma delivered a perfectly weighted pass over the Uzbek defense, and right-back Daniel Munoz timed his run to volley home past goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov, giving Colombia a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Uzbekistan Fights Back
Uzbekistan equalized in the 60th minute. Eldor Shomurodov controlled the ball and fired a volley that Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas failed to handle cleanly. Abbosbek Fayzullaev reacted quickest to head in the rebound and level the score.
Colombia Regains Control
Colombia responded swiftly. In the 65th minute, a loose throw-in allowed Gustavo Puerta to launch a counter-attack. He passed to Luis Diaz on the edge of the box, who fired a low drive into the far corner to restore Colombia's lead.
Late Sealer
Colombia put the result beyond doubt in the 99th minute when substitute Jaminton Campaz scored to make it 3-1. With Portugal and DR Congo drawing 1-1 earlier, Colombia now top Group K.
