NAMAKKAL: A tragic accident on the Salem-Cochin National Highway in Kumarapalayam, Namakkal district, claimed the life of a driver on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred when a truck carrying cement mixture collided with a stationary truck that had broken down on the highway.
Details of the Accident
The stationary truck, loaded with iron bars from Salem to Perundurai in Erode district, had suffered a mechanical failure and was parked in the Kumarapalayam Teachers' Residence area. Subsequently, a truck transporting cement mixture from Valayakkaranur to Anthiyur in Erode district rammed into the broken-down vehicle from behind.
The driver of the cement mixture truck, identified as P Eswaran, 43, of Erode, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An officer from the Kumarapalayam police station confirmed the fatality.
Rescue and Investigation
Personnel from the fire department arrived promptly and recovered the body of Eswaran from the wreckage. The body was then transported to the Kumarapalayam Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
The collision caused significant traffic disruption on the national highway, with vehicles stranded for over two hours. Police teams from Kumarapalayam rushed to the location and worked to clear the road and restore normal traffic flow.
A case has been registered by the Kumarapalayam police, and investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials are examining factors such as driver fatigue, vehicle maintenance, and road conditions.
