The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has revised the start times for the upcoming T20I matches against India, moving them one hour earlier to 5:30 PM local time (10 PM IST) from the originally scheduled 6:30 PM (11 PM IST). This change aims to maximize television viewership, particularly for the Indian audience.
Series Schedule and Broadcast Details
Team India is set to tour England for eight white-ball matches, comprising three ODIs and five T20Is, from July 1 to July 19, as reported by ESPNCricinfo. The three evening T20I fixtures have been rescheduled after discussions between the ECB and broadcasters. The start times for England's home matches are finalized through consultations involving the ECB, venues, the opposing board, and domestic as well as overseas broadcasters—in this case, Sky Sports (UK) and Sony Sports Network (India).
Financial Considerations
The decision to move away from the 6:30 PM standard start time, which had become customary in recent seasons, underscores the ECB's reliance on high-value broadcast series, particularly those featuring India. The ECB's recently published financial report highlights this dependency. The board projects a profit this year due to India's tour but anticipates losses in 2027, despite the men's team hosting the highly anticipated Ashes series against Australia.
"Attention should be drawn to the fact that the ECB's revenues are inherently cyclical, reflecting the scheduling of high-value broadcast series by opposition," the report stated, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
Ticket Sales and Fan Interest
Tickets for the tour went on sale last year. All three ODIs, a format that has seen a surge in popularity due to the presence of Indian superstars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, have been sold out. Only a few hundred tickets remain for the T20I matches. During the peak English summer, sunset occurs after 9 PM, meaning all five T20Is will be completed under floodlights.
Indian Squad Highlights
The Indian squad for the T20I series is a 16-member team featuring 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, who replaces T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
Interest has also surged for Ireland's two home T20Is against India on June 26 and 28. These matches could see Sooryavanshi make his international debut, potentially becoming the youngest Indian to do so, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record from 1989. Both matches were sold out even before India announced the squad. The Civil Service ground at Stormont in Belfast, with a capacity of around 4,500, will host these fixtures.
