The Ecuador Football Federation (FEF) has formally complained to FIFA World Cup organisers after approximately 1,000 Mexican supporters gathered outside the team's hotel in Mexico City on Monday night, disrupting the squad's preparation ahead of their last-32 match against the co-hosts.
Incident Details
According to local media reports cited by Reuters, the fans staged a late-night 'serenade' using noisemakers, pots, and buckets while singing the traditional Mexican folk song 'Cielito Lindo.' Police eventually intervened and dispersed the crowd. The FEF described the conduct as 'far removed from the principles of fair play, equality and unity that a football World Cup should represent.'
Official Complaint
In a statement released on June 30, the FEF urged tournament authorities to pay closer attention to such incidents and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and protection of Ecuador's players, coaching staff, and supporters. The federation expressed trust that 'these unsporting acts will not tarnish the football celebration that unites two brotherly countries,' adding that Ecuador would 'always respond on the pitch.'
Match Context
Ecuador faces Mexico at the Estadio Azteca later on Tuesday in a crucial knockout stage encounter. The complaint underscores tensions surrounding the match, with Ecuador seeking to advance while dealing with external distractions.
