CSK's Stephen Fleming Discusses Team Transition and Backs Sanju Samson
BENGALURU: Stephen Fleming, the long-serving head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has been the franchise's guiding force from the dugout for over a decade. Since taking charge in 2009, Fleming has overseen both the title-winning highs and the challenging lean phases of the five-time champions.
Recent Struggles and Transitional Phase
The last two seasons have tested the team significantly, with consecutive failures to reach the playoffs. This has led to growing scrutiny over the team's auction strategy and selection decisions. Fleming acknowledges that CSK is currently in a transitional phase, a period of rebuilding and adjustment as they aim to return to their winning ways.
Sanju Samson's Integration and Form
As part of this rebuild, the inclusion of star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, a key figure in India's recent T20 World Cup triumph, was a strategic move. However, Samson has managed just 22 runs in three games so far this season, raising questions about his form and fit within the team.
Fleming, though, has backed the opener to come good. He explained, "It's difficult when you've been at a franchise for some time and even though he probably feels pretty comfortable, there's still an element of belonging and he's going through the process of connecting with this team. There's a little bit of work to be done off the field that we're doing just that to make the bonds a bit tighter, but he's fine."
The coach emphasized that Samson's integration into the CSK setup requires time and effort, both on and off the field, to strengthen team bonds and ensure he feels fully part of the squad.
Looking Ahead
Fleming's confidence in Samson underscores the team's commitment to nurturing talent during this transitional period. As CSK navigates this phase, the focus remains on building a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level, with Fleming's experienced leadership continuing to steer the franchise through its challenges and aspirations.
